St. Martin’s Construction Update

“The building material supplier told us that the fir beams are the nicest beams he has seen in     his forty years in construction. God grew them so they rightly belong in one of his churches.”

–Colin Monley, General Contractor

The quotation above was part of a weekly construction update from our contractor and refers to the beauty of the large fir beams being used to frame the narthex and outdoor covered area. As Mark said to me, it is very special to be working with a contractor who sees our project as much more than “just another building.”

Construction has been underway for a month now and much has been accomplished. In the sanctuary, the major focus so far has been installing the fire sprinkler system. Because of the height of our ceiling and roof, the contractor had to construct a safety system for the upper roof that allows workers to harness themselves when they are working at the upper levels. In front of the sanctuary, the rock base of the narthex slab and the baptismal pool have been formed, and framing has begun for the narthex and outdoor covered area.

In the parish hall, the storage pop outs and new entryway on Hawthorn are taking shape. In the classroom building, the interior walls have been taken out to create two larger rooms instead of three small. In the next weeks, you will see continuing work on the narthex and on the Hawthorn Lane entry to the parish hall. The new sanctuary and parish hall windows and roofing will also be installed soon.

We are very happy to report that we will be doing significantly more to the kitchen than we had originally planned. This additional work has been made possible by a variety of factors: two grants that we obtained (from Episcopal Community Services and United Thank Offering) totaling over $12,000, some additional donations made by parishioners specifically for the kitchen, and our ability to allocate a bit more of the capital campaign money to the kitchen than originally planned. We will now be able to do all of the following in the kitchen and pantry: install new flooring and windows; paint all surfaces, including wood cabinetry on walls; install a larger kitchen exterior door so that large appliances fit in and out; purchase a new dishwasher and dishwasher floor drain; put garbage disposals and commercial faucets on two of the sinks; add a new dedicated hand washing sink; buy a secondary stove; remove wood countertops and lower cabinets along one entire side of kitchen and install metal counters in their place; add ventilation to hot water heater cabinet; improve electrical circuitry (to prevent blowing circuits when we make coffee); move microwave to wall mount to obtain more usable counter space. Given the extent of this work, we will most likely need to close the kitchen for a minimum of a week. Plenty of notice will be given and Davis Community Meals still plans to provide regular meals outdoors on our grounds (sack lunches and other simple food) while the kitchen is being upgraded.

To see beautiful photos documenting each step of the construction process, visit The Episcopal Church of St. Martin on Facebook. We are grateful to Gail Gong for being on site regularly and taking these photos. Our expected construction completion date is still the week of Sept. 24, just in time for Ernie’s ordination.

It is an honor and a privilege to work with everyone involved in this project. If you have questions about the construction, please be sure to talk to me, Pierre, Mark, Ernie, or a Building Committee or Vestry member.

June 2011

Spring 2010 Original Announcement and Building Plans:

The Clergy and Vestry have decided to launch a major fund raising campaign to raise money for the changes and repairs needed to keep St. Martin’s operational and viable.

Accomplishing these facility goals will be a major stepping-stone that will define our church for years to come.  Our ability to fulfill our mission depends upon having the facilities and the financial stability to reach deep into our community helping people make a life-changing connection with God.

This is a huge undertaking that begins NOW!  We’re beginning a campaign to inform and inspire both the family of St. Martin’s and the wider community of Davis and beyond. We want to make everyone aware of our needs and opportunities.

WELCOME to St. Martin’s! This is the greeting we extend to members and visitors alike as they enter the door of the church on Sunday mornings. St. Martin’s offers a warm welcome to everyone who enters our walls.

TRANSFORMATION of lives is our mission. Our facilities need to be transformed to continue this work to which the people of St. Martin are so dedicated.

PRESERVATION is needed to keep our facilities in good repair if we are to preserve them and preserve our traditions.  Many of our buildings are showing the effects of decades of use without the benefit of significant maintenance.

SERVICE in the community has historically been a focus of the people of St. Martin’s. We want to minister to those in need just as Jesus taught His disciples.
