From Our Curate
Dear People of St. Martin’s,
The road to ordination is long, and I am delighted to have the privilege of beginning ordained ministry alongside you. I am so excited to get to know each of you over the coming months! 

A bit about me: I am a lifelong Epsicopalian and grew up attending Christ Episcopal Church, Alameda. My family was very involved in every aspect of parish life, from rummage sales to food banks; I even served as a youth member of the vestry in high school. My summers were spent at both St. Dorothy’s Rest and the Bishop’s Ranch, each of which rooted in me a deep attunement to the movings of the Divine in all of creation. 

I received my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Women’s Studies from California State University, Chico and went on to serve as Program Director for St. Dorothy’s Rest. Subsequently, I served as Program Director for Camp Galilee in the Diocese of Nevada before moving east for seminary at Yale Divinity School. My studies, in addition to the typical seminary curriculum of church history and theology, focused on eco-theology, asking questions like, “What does it mean to be creatures living amongst other creatures whom God also created and has relationship with?”

I love to read fantasy novels, spend time outdoors, knit, play with my cats Nala, Sarabi, and Linda, and explore new restaurants with my fiance, Christopher. Quality time with friends and loved ones is my biggest love language!

I look forward to learning more about what St. Martin’s is for you and witnessing how God is moving in this place!

This Sunday, July 26! – Special Welcome Coffee Hour after 10am Service
Plan to stay for a special coffee hour after the 10am service to meet and welcome our curate, Maggie, on her first Sunday serving at St. Martin’s. We have cake, fruit, savory snacks, and more. We have soccer for kids who want to play. Many thanks to everyone who brought snacks and helped organize!

This Sunday morning, July 26, we will have one 10am morning service only (Rite II Holy Eucharist).

Last Chance To RSVP For The Older, Wiser Laity (OWL) Tea on July 29
Parishioners and clergy are invited to the Older, Wiser Laity (OWL) Tea on July 29 from 2-4pm in Room 6/7. Come to share social time and light refreshments. We have a few spaces left, so if you haven’t already, please RSVP to the church office by Monday, July 27 so that we know how many to expect (info@churchofstmartin.org; 530-756-0444).

Celebrate The Belfry at a Dinner and Dessert Auction, August 1
All are invited to share a meal at Davis Lutheran Church (317 E 8th St in Davis) on August 1 at 5pm in thanks and celebration of the Belfry’s supporters and to encourage continued support. All are welcome, but RSVPs are requested here or call the DLC office (530) 756-5052. The Belfry is the Lutheran Episcopal Campus Ministry on A Street near the UC Davis campus.

Next Sunday, August 2, Two Sunday Morning Services, Adult Forum, Concert
Return to Regular Sunday Morning Worship Schedule: On August 2, we return to our regular pattern of Sunday morning worship at 8 am (Rite I) and 10am (Rite II with music).

Adult Forum on Science and Faith, 11:30am: St. Martin’s parishioner and PhD candidate, Ben Eustis-Guthrie will give a talk after the 10am service entitled “Why Pythagoras Was Right.” In Ben’s words, “The presentation adapts my favorite general education physics lessons about profound connections between music theory, quantum mechanics, and the periodic table. I’ll make connections to history and philosophy and to how our instincts for seeking beauty in the universe are vindicated by science. I’ll continue with what I believe this means for faith.”

When We Talk about Love: A Mini-Recital for Voice and Piano, 4pm: Music affiliates of the Church of St. Martin, Pierre Gianferrara, Sarah Eustis-Guthrie, and Mark Grote, will present a brief recital of art songs for soprano, baritone, and piano featuring works by Fauré, Mendelssohn, and others. Admission is free. Join us in the church; all are welcome!

Love God, Care for Creation – First Official “Green Team” Meeting, August 6 on Zoom
We are launching a Green Team to continue the work formerly done by our Care for God’s Creation Committee and others. Come to the meeting on August 6 at 6pm on Zoom to explore new materials that will help us with “Becoming a Community of Creation” and map out the path ahead. If you would like to be part of this ministry but can’t attend in August, contact Junior Warden Elise Keddie or the church office. (Get Zoom link from the office).

Love God, Love Your Neighbor – Hands-on Service
St. Martin’s Weekly Food Collection: “Every person. Every week. One item of food,” is the motto of the Jerry Hulbert Weekly Food Collection. Sunday’s collection goes to STEAC. The following Sunday’s goes to Dixon Family Services.

STEAC Kids’ Food Packs: Help STEAC pack weekend food packs for DJUSD children who may be food insecure on the first Wednesday of the month in St. Martin’s parish hall. The next food packing date is August 5, 9 – 11:30am. Sign up here.

Rector’s Office Hours
Rev. Pamela holds office hours on Tuesday afternoons at 4pm. Her next office hours will be on Tuesday, August 4 from 4-5:15pm. If you’d like to see Pamela at a different time, you can contact her directly (pamela@churchofstmartin.org) or contact the church office to help arrange a time.
