Announcements for the Week of Sunday, May 10, 2026

Happening at Church This Sunday, May 10
Rogation Sunday: In the Episcopal Church, this Sunday, Rogation Sunday, is a time of prayer and intercession, traditionally involving processions around the parish boundaries and blessings for the land and its inhabitants. Before the 10am service, we’ll have a Rogation Procession around the grounds, where we’ll sing and stop several times to bless the land. Meet at the doors to the church at 10am.

Music Notes for 10am Service: On the Sixth Sunday of Easter, Rogation Sunday, our music turns our attention to the created world as a sign of God’s glory and sustaining care. Rogation days have long been associated with prayers for the land, for agriculture, and for the fruit of human labor. Our anthem, “The Heavens are Telling the Glory of God,” is a chorus from “The Creation,” an oratorio by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). In this movement (a musical response to the fourth day of Creation), a heavenly choir led by a trio of archangels gives voice to the idea that creation itself proclaims God’s majesty and sings God’s praise. Youth Liturgy of the Word: On second Sundays of the month, junior and senior high youth join Rev. Debbie during the first part of the 10am service to discuss what the Gospel is saying to them. Join the Rogation Procession first and, instead of going into the church after the procession, go with Rev. Debbie to Room 8 to reflect on and discuss Sunday’s Gospel.

Guest Preacher: Today, we welcome Mae Barnes as our guest preacher. Mae is a Vestry member and is graduating this month from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley with a Ph.D. in Theology and Ethics.

We wish a happy Mother’s Day to all mothers as well as to all who nurture, mentor, and love children and all God’s creatures!

Diocesan Opportunities for Connection and Learning
Diocesan Women’s Retreat at Faith, Cameron Park, Saturday, May 16, 9:30am – 4pm: This retreat is open to all women in the Diocese of Northern CA and has the theme, “Listening to God: Listening to One Another.” The gathering includes programs, lunch, and Eucharist. Suggested donation $40 (scholarships available). The facilitator is Christine Jurisich, M.A. (www.retreatreflectrenew.org). Fill out this form to register by May 9.

California Museum Tour of Japanese Incarceration Exhibit “Uprooted”: The California Museum (1020 O Street, Sacramento) has reserved a tour on June 6, 10:30am-12pm, of their exhibit “Uprooted” for sixteen people from the Diocese of Northern California, at a charge of $10 per person. Docent Steve Sasaki will lead the tour. To reserve a spot, complete this form. Your place will be finalized by sending a check for $10 per person to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 2351 Pleasant Grove Blvd, Roseville, CA 95747, with “Uprooted” in the memo line. Deadline for receipt of check: May 26, 2026. We’ll confirm registration and payment, and start a waiting list after we reach the capacity of 16 persons.

Save the Dates! Upcoming Events
May 17, “Knowing Jesus in a New Way” Bible Study after 10am Service: In an adult forum, we’ll explore the shape and purpose of the various Easter season stories using a Godly Play format. Over the summer, we’ll have additional sessions in this series, including June 21 “The Great Family,” July 12 “The Parable of the Sower,” and August 16 “The Story of Joseph.”

May 24, The Day of Pentecost: We’ll have ONE SERVICE only at 10am on Pentecost. It will be a Fourth Sunday service (meaning the service will be more accessible to the youngest in our congregation), and we’ll have readers in world languages. Remember to wear red to symbolize the Holy Spirit, if possible! After the service, we’ll have an all-parish BBQ with meat and vegan options hosted by St. Martin’s Buildings and Grounds Committee, plus soccer for kids on the great lawn. Join the fun!

May 31, Celebration of Graduates: We’ll celebrate all those graduating this year from any level of education or any type of academic or technical program. Please let the office know if you or your children/grandchildren are graduating as we’d love to list their names in the service bulletin.

June 14, PRIDE Eucharist and Chalking of the Parking Lot and Sidewalks: June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. On June 14, we’ll have special prayers and reflections and chalking of the sidewalks and parking lot. St. Martin’s will have a booth at Davis Pride on Saturday, June 6 at Civic Center Park. If you’d like to help at the booth during the day, please let the office know.

Opportunities for Children and Youth
Registration for Diocesan Summer Camps Open:
Registration is open for Camp Living Waters, Camp Galilee, and St. Dorothy’s Rest. These Diocesan camps offer a wide range of experiences, from traditional camps for ages 6 and up to family camps. Registration for Summer Bible Day Camp in Davis, July 20-24, Open: St. Martin’s is participating in Davis Progressive Churches Vacation Bible Camp with Mt. Cross staff and taking place at Davis Community Church this summer. Children (grades K-6) and youth (grades 7-12) are welcome from July 20-24, 9am to 3pm each day. Cost is $150 for K-5th grade and $50 for 7–12th grade youth; scholarships are available. Register here for kids (select traveling day camp) and here for youth.

Davis Progressive Youth Collective Game Night, May 15, 6:30-9pm: For students in 6th – 12th grades; bring a friend. The event will be at Lutheran Church of the Incarnation. Find more information here.

A Place at the Table Potlucks Are Back!
Saturday, May 23, 5:30pm, RSVP to the Office
Our monthly “A Place at the Table” potlucks are hosted by parishioners at their homes or at the church. Guests are asked to bring something to share for dinner. Our next A Place at the Table potluck will be on Saturday, May 23, at 5:30pm at Charlie and Diane Bamforth’s home. The hosts are the Bamforths along with Craig and Carla Harris. They have space for 8 guests. Please let the office know by May 17 if you would like to attend. We are also seeking hosts for June, July, and beyond. As a host, you decide the time, date, and number of guests. Let the office know if you’re interested in hosting.
