St. Martin’s News for the Week of Sunday, 11/08/2026
From the Rector
Dear Ones,
I am looking forward to our combined service on Sunday at 10am, a time to celebrate our patron saint, Martin of Tours and to bless the ingathering of pledges. And of course I can’t wait to try out the goodies that we’ll be tasting at the Great St. Martin’s Bake Off!
As you probably already know, November is Native American Heritage month, and the Episcopal Church encourages us all to learn more about the history and culture of local indigenous peoples. There are relevant exhibits at the Sacramento History Museum, the California Museum, at UC Davis’s own Gorman Museum of Native American Art, and at the Davis Arts Center. Tomorrow, Saturday, November 7, at 4pm, Diana Almendariz will lead a Tule Arts and Storytelling workshop at the Davis Arts Center, part of their “Good Fire, Living Water: The Gifts of a Marsh Economy” exhibit. Many of you will remember Diana from the workshops she has given here and at the Cache Creek Conservancy.
On a related note, on Thursday, November 12 at 1pm, I’ll be leading the diocese’s monthly Commission on the Environment meeting on Zoom. The topic will be the importance of indigenous perspectives on creation care, something that was central to the Province VIII conference I recently attended. It would be great to have some St. Martin’s folks join the conversation!
Blessings and thanks,
Pamela+
This Sunday! Feast of St. Martin, Bake Off, Stewardship Ingathering
Ingathering of Pledges: On Sunday, we celebrate Saint Martin of Tours and the final Sunday of our stewardship season. The service will include a gathering of pledges for 2027. If you haven’t pledged, you can put your pledge card in the offering plates today. If you’ve already pledged via card, email, or phone, your pledge will be represented at the altar along with those received this Sunday. We are grateful for all pledges and donations to the church. Please join us in building a house of welcome!
Other Ways to Submit Your Pledge: You can mail or deliver your pledge to the church office. You can also pledge via e-mail by writing to our confidential pledge e-mail address. If possible, please pledge by Sunday November 8.
It’s a Party! The Great St. Martin’s Bake Off: After church on Sunday, stay to sample the entries in the bake off and vote for your favorites! For the young at heart, we’ll have lanterns to make and goose cookies to decorate. We hope you’ll stay for this festive event! If you are one of the bakers, bring your entry to the parish hall before the start of the 10am service and fill out a short entry form.
Godly Play and Youth Liturgy of the Word, 10am: Godly Play for children TK – 6th grade meets in Room 4 and Youth Liturgy of the Word for junior and senior high youth in Room 8.
Music Notes for Sunday 10am Service: In honor of St. Martin of Tours, the soldier saint known for his generosity and for whom our parish is named, the Sanctuary Choir will sing an anthem that has become a favorite with many in our congregation because it so beautifully expresses our parish’s mission and experience. Harold Friedells’s “Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether” brings together themes of community, the Eucharist, and everyday holiness. For the complete music notes, please visit our website.
Thanksgiving Project Donations Accepted This Sunday and Next
Social Justice & Outreach invites your donations to the Christine Blanchard Thanksgiving Project, which provides grocery store gift cards to community members in need at the holidays. This year, Davis Community Meals and Housing, the Undocumented Student Center at UC Davis, Davis Joint Unified School District, and the Yolo Healthy Aging Alliance will be recipients of the gift cards. Monetary donations of any amount will be gratefully accepted through November 15. Send a check to St. Martin’s Church with “Thanksgiving Project” in the memo line or use the “GIVE” button on our website and select “Thanksgiving Project.” Social Justice & Outreach members will be at a table after the service on Sunday to answer your questions. Find more information about this project, its history, and its aims on our website.
Yolo County Transgender Day of Remembrance and Resilience Interfaith Service, Friday, November 20 at St. Martin’s
Join St. Martin’s, the Davis Phoenix Coalition, and the Yolo Interfaith Queer Alliance on Friday, November 20, to honor and remember transgender people whose lives have been lost to violence and discrimination. Weather permitting, there will be an outdoor altar and labyrinth walk beginning at 5:30pm. The candlelight service begins at 6pm in the church, with a reception following. For those who may wish to walk the labyrinth and visit the altar only, you are welcome to do so during the service also. The Transgender Day of Remembrance, first observed in 1999 and now commemorated worldwide, honors the memory of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming people lost to anti-transgender violence and discrimination. All are welcome to attend.
Support Our Immigrant Neighbors
NorCal Resist calls on volunteers to observe and be present at a variety of locations. Find more information here about Migra watch, accompaniment, and court watch trainings. Next week, of course, is Election Day. I am sure many of you have already voted, but nonetheless there is a certain solemnity about the day itself. Our Presiding…

I am of course praying for all those involved, especially those who lost loved ones, and for the whole community. You don’t need me to belabor the depths of this tragedy, or to say yet again that gun violence has become an epidemic in our country. We will, again, wear orange stoles on Sunday to remind us…
