Message from the Very Rev. Pamela from January 2, 2026:

Dear Ones,

Happy New Year! And, of course, Happy Christmas! Today is the ninth day of the Christmas season. As I write, our house still looks completely immersed in the holiday—stockings, nutcrackers, a decorated tree, and the rest. I love being able to savor Christmas for a few more days after all the holiday hubbub has subsided, and maybe even to have some uninterrupted reading time. For a procrastinator like me, it means I never have to worry that I’ve missed it, that Christmas is over before I even got into the spirit of it.

This Sunday we’ll still be singing carols and hearing one of the stories we most associate with Christmas: the arrival of the magi, who have followed a star to Bethlehem, to pay homage to the newborn king. This is also the Gospel appointed for the Feast of the Epiphany, which from the earliest years of the Church has been celebrated on January 6 (not incidentally, the date of this feast was settled long before we had a definite appointed day for Christmas). 

While we don’t have a service on the day itself, I hope this year we will remember that the season after Epiphany is a singular opportunity in the church year to focus on Christology, on how the person of Jesus of Nazareth came to be understood and experienced as the Christ, the anointed one. There are wonderful traditions associated with this season, and we’ll dip into some of them at church, including chalking the door and having a bonfire. In fact, if you want to learn a bit more about Epiphany, join me during Coffee Hour this Sunday. I’ll be at a table in the parish hall. And, again, enjoy these last few days of Christmas.
