Message from the Very Rev. Pamela from August 14, 2026:
Dear Ones,
I stepped outside this morning and was met with—could it be?—a rush of cool air! There is nothing I like better than crisp mornings, especially after our recent heatwave. Autumn is my favorite season of the year, and while we’re not there yet, and it’s likely we’ll have another string of hot or very hot days before we get there, it was lovely to get that assurance that a change in season is just around the corner.
Besides the cool air, I love autumn because it means the start of the school year. What a time of possibility and potential! Although UC Davis doesn’t start for another month or so, other schools are already welcoming students back, or will be soon.
Next Sunday, August 23, we’ll do our part to welcome the school year with a Blessing of the Backpacks at all services. This isn’t just for students, but for parents, educators, and anyone else who would like a blessing on their work and study in the coming months. We’ll also have Pizza Church that afternoon at 5pm. It will include Eucharist, the story of Moses, music, and prayer, and of course be followed by pizza and fellowship. Again, this isn’t just for young children and families. If you can’t make the morning service, or just want a change of pace, this is for you, too.
It has already been a full and lively summer at St. Martin’s, and it’s not over yet. Meanwhile, we’re deep into our fall plans, including stewardship, new formation opportunities, and beloved traditions like the Blessing of Animals, Día de los Muertos, and more. In September I’ll be entering my tenth year as rector (I started in September of 2017), and I’ve never been more excited for what lies ahead.
Blessings,
Pamela+
