The Care for God’s Creation Committee (CfGC) works alongside the Social Justice and Outreach (SJO) Committee to carry out the Church in the World Ministry at St. Martin’s. We welcome you to join us in helping to care for God’s creation and to work for social justice.

CfGC is excited to announce our theme for the year: Healthy Soil—Healthy Plants—Healthy Community. We’re planning activities that we hope will bring the congregation closer together while having some fun at the same time – even though we’ll be talking about something as serious as reducing climate change. Whether becoming better informed or taking action to promote positive change, we hope you’ll join us in some or all of these encounters.
Movie Discussions – This is like a book discussion but you don’t have to read a book. “Kiss the Ground” is a documentary about healing the earth’s atmosphere by trapping carbon in the soil. This sequestration process will help make healthier soil that can grow more plants organically to feed us. Understanding this is applicable for our own home gardens as well as local farms. This is now showing on Netflix and is 87 minutes long. We hope you will join us on Sunday, November 22 at 4:00 to discuss it. Please save the date. (Let us know if you do not have access to Netflix.)
Garden Talks – Plans are underway to attract garden lovers of all levels. Informal conversations with Q&A sessions will cover seasonal topics such as “How to Love Your Clay Soil”, “Is Soil Really Alive?”, “Want to Grow More What You Want to Eat?” More details to come!
Speakers – On September 23, UC Davis Professor Julie Sze spoke of injustices suffered among our society’s most vulnerable, as described in her recent book Environmental Justice in a Moment of Danger. Adelita Serena from the non-governmental organization Mothers Out Front shared her real-life experiences working in the fields of Salinas and amplified Sze’s message of motivating social change through storytelling, theatre, and song. Participate in Advocacy and Coalitions – Are you feeling plenty educated and ready for action? You’ll be happy to know that we joined other local climate advocacy groups to press the recent passage of the Yolo County Resolution on Climate Emergency. See https://www.davisvanguard.org/2020/09/while-massive-ca-fires-burn-supervisors-declare-a-climate-emergency-commit-to-justice-and-mobilization/. We need more dedicated advocates to work on the local, regional, state, and national levels. Some actions can be as easy as writing postcards or encouraging your friends to write to our leaders and legislators.
