Message from the Very Rev. Pamela from May 22, 2026:
Dear Ones,
“God’s love is stronger than death, stronger than hurt,
Stronger than lying and cheating and stealing,
And fighting and hurting and hating.”
These words are part of the story that I’ll be telling at our Pentecost service this Sunday. They come from a curriculum called Beulah Land, designed for children by the renowned Episcopal priest and educator Gretchen Wolff Pritchard, author of the book Offering the Gospel to Children and also creator of the Sunday Papers that we place in the children’s pews every Sunday.
Still, when I read those words, I don’t hear something childish; rather, the words plainly and eloquently speak Gospel truth, accessible to all ages. In a world where so much bad news comes at us so quickly, something as horrific as Monday’s shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego can get lost after only a couple of days of media attention. We need to find words that anchor us back in the greater reality that these terrible things are happening, and that those who are hurt and wounded are beloved children of God, and most of all that this terror is not the whole story, and certainly not the end of the story.
Both Beulah Land and Godly Play, our Sunday school curriculum, repeat refrains about God’s love and enduring presence that provide spiritual sustenance for all of us. As we approach the great feast of Pentecost, we must remember how much words matter, as they are echoes of the divine Word that came into the world to give us life. And, as we will hear again on Sunday,
“Nothing can separate us from the love of God,
because God’s love is always enough, and more than enough. Amen.”
Blessings,
Pamela+
