Musical Meditation on the Nocturnes of Tenebrae

A Musical Meditation on the Nocturnes of Tenebrae
Music of Frédéric Chopin
with Jeffrey Jubenville, pianist

On Wednesday of Holy Week, April 1, 2026, at 7 pm, the Episcopal Church of St. Martin in Davis (640 Hawthorn Lane) will present A Musical Meditation on the Nocturnes of Tenebrae, an evening of reflective piano music inspired by the ancient Holy Week tradition of Tenebrae, performed by pianist Jeffrey Jubenville.

Tenebrae—Latin for “darkness”—is a centuries-old observance in which candles are gradually extinguished as nine liturgical “nocturnes” (or “night watches”) of scripture and prayer lead worshippers through the final hours before the crucifixion. This program reimagines that structure as a contemplative concert experience. Instead of chanted psalms, the audience will hear nine musical nocturnes (“night music”) by Frédéric Chopin.

Chopin’s nocturnes are known for their lyrical beauty, emotional depth, and intimate character. Though composed for the concert hall or salon, their expressive range mirrors the themes of Holy Week: prayer, betrayal, sorrow, and watchful waiting.

This unique Holy Week event is offered not as a formal worship service, but as a musical meditation open to the wider community. The performance will conclude in silence, echoing the traditional strepitus of Tenebrae and inviting listeners into quiet reflection. Admission is Free.
