Dear Ones,
This Sunday is Trinity Sunday, and it seems appropriate that we are also taking time to celebrate and thank so many members of our community. I wanted to add my own word of thanks to everyone who makes the liturgy and the music at St. Martin’s so wonderful week after week, especially our sanctuary choir and their leaders, Suzanne and Jeffrey, as well as all of those who have stepped up this year to provide leadership to our children and youth. Thank you
My sense of gratitude was also overflowing last Sunday, as we experienced the movement of the Spirit throughout the celebration of Pentecost. The flowers, the music, the extraordinary reading of the passage from the Acts of the Apostles in that incredible multitude of languages—all of which could only be topped by our time together after worship, chatting and feasting, all thanks to the work of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, who already give so generously of themselves to our parish.
I will be away on vacation next week, enjoying a BIG high school reunion in Hawaii. I admit to a little trepidation, but I remember my spiritual director’s repeated admonition that “comparison is the thief of joy.” And I rejoice and give thanks in knowing that there is a loving, joyful, dedicated congregation here still doing the work that God would have us do, being Christ’s hands and feet in the world and especially right here in Davis. What a tremendous gift and blessing!

This Sunday – Trinity Sunday, Baptism, and Honoring Graduates
This Sunday, May 31, we celebrate Trinity Sunday! At the 10am service, we baptize Juliane Bryan and welcome her into the household of God. At both services, we’ll celebrate our graduates at all levels of the educational system. You’ll find their names and accomplishments listed in the bulletins. We’ll also thank our Godly Play and Youth Liturgy of the Word leaders for their year of service to our children and youth. Godly Play will meet for the last time until fall on June 7, while Youth Liturgy of the Word will meet for the last time this program year on June 14.
Special Coffee Hour after 10am Service: Help us congratulate our graduates after the 10am service at a special coffee hour featuring tea sandwiches, fruit, cake, and other assorted desserts. We thank DeSay Judd for providing some of the special treats and for helping with set-up. As always we are grateful to our weekly coffee hour coordinators (this week, Tony Miller and Bob Holm).
Music Notes for 10am Service
On Sunday, we say thank you to our Sanctuary Choir for another year of service. We will see the Sanctuary Choir again in September; in the meantime, you are welcome to join us as part of the ad hoc, no-commitment, weekly Summer Choir, which will meet to rehearse at 9:15 on Sunday mornings during June, July, and August. Today’s Offertory anthem, “Achieved is the Glorious Work,” from “The Creation” by Franz Josef Haydn, was selected in praise and thanks to mark the end of our first program year with professional Section Leaders in the choir. We are grateful for Zoe Schuck, Samuel Peters, Gavin Pinnow, and Daniel Ostrom, and to the funding which makes their participation possible. Daniel will be leaving us to pursue his academic studies in southern California; our Communion anthem, “Lead Me, Lord,” was selected with his voice in mind. Jeffrey’s Prelude is a Passacaglia by James Woodman, representing Pentecost and the Trinity. “In Festo Pentecostes” uses the cantus firmus Veni Creator as a ground bass, above which 15 variations evoke the imagery of wind and fire. St. Martin’s Booth at Davis Pride, June 6 – Seeking Volunteers
June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. St. Martin’s will have a booth at Davis Pride on Saturday, June 6 at Civic Center Park. We’ll be staffing the booth in one- and two-hour shifts between 4pm and 8pm, as well as setting-up at 3pm and taking down at 8pm. Please let the office know by Monday, June 1 if you would like to volunteer and at what time so that we can schedule shifts.
Happening Soon – Mark Your Calendars
June 14, PRIDE Eucharist and Chalking of the Parking Lot and Sidewalks: On June 14, we’ll have a Pride Eucharist at 10am with special prayers and reflections. Right after the 10am service, we will chalk the sidewalks and spray paint parking lot crosswalks. If you want to help spray paint, wear appropriate clothes for painting; we will provide masks and gloves.
June 21, Bible Study on Abraham and Sarah: Join Diane Bamforth and others after the 10am service for a time of learning and reflection. Our lectionary this summer will include several weeks of selections from the Book of Genesis that focus on Abraham, Sarah, and those who came after them; don’t miss this chance to ponder these ancient stories anew! Meet in Room 6/7.
July 5, 12, 19, 26: We’ll have ONE service at 10am during the four Sundays in July. Let’s enjoy all worshipping together for the first full month of summer. We’ll return to our schedule of two Sunday services on August 2.
Davis Progressive Youth Collective – Upcoming Events
Pride Fest, Saturday, June 6, 4 – 5:30pm: All ages will meet at Davis Lutheran Church (B and 8th) and walk as a group to Davis Pride. Children under 12 need a parent to accompany them. You’ll have passport cards to visit different booths, and when the card is full, it can be traded in for swag.
Movie Night, Friday, June 19, 6:30-8:30pm: Students in grades 6 – 12 are invited to Davis United Methodist Church to watch a classic–Goonies! Popcorn and drinks will be provided. The event is free. More information for both events here.
Service and Leadership Opportunities
Serve on a St. Martin’s Committee: We are seeking one more at-large member to serve on a Funding Selection Team, along with two Vestry members and two Social Justice and Outreach Committee members. The group meets twice this summer and a few more times through Easter to discern which charitable organizations receive special offerings and designated funds. If you are interested or have questions, contact Rev. Pamela or the office.
Offer to Host “A Place at the Table” Potluck: As host, you decide the time, date, and number of guests. Guests bring food, based on your instructions; events can take place at your home or at the church. Let us know if you’re interested in hosting for June, July, August, or beyond. The church office would be happy to help you organize the event.
St. Martin’s Weekly Food Collection: “Every person. Every week. One item of food,” is the motto of the Jerry Hulbert Weekly Food Collection. Today’s nonperishable food goes to The Pantry at UC Davis. The following week’s donations go to the CA House Multifaith Living Community.
Remember to vote in the California Statewide Primary Election
Voting Centers are open now, and ballots are due no later than June 2.
