St. Martin’s News for the Week of Sunday, 07/19/2026

From the Rector
Dear Ones,
I hope to see many of you at tomorrow’s ordination of Maggie Rutherford to the transitional diaconate. As you probably know, getting to the point of being able to welcome a new curate has been quite a journey! I am grateful for all the ways the parish has come together to make this possible. And now we have the pleasure of welcoming Maggie into our community, as we support her in her new role as an ordained clergy person, too.

On Sunday morning I will join Maggie (soon to be Rev. Maggie!) at St. Luke’s in Galt, our partner church in the curacy program. Then I’ll be at our first-ever Pizza Church on Sunday afternoon. I am so excited about this new offering, which is designed for all generations to come together to sing, pray, have Communion, and enjoy fellowship and fun, not to mention pizza! We’ll start at 5, worship will be less than an hour, and we should be ready to clean up and head home by 6:30 at the latest.

It’s been wonderful to be able to start so many new things this summer. I hope you’re taking advantage of the sampling of new offerings, from monthly Bible study to Taizé to Pizza Church–and don’t forget to invite a friend from time to time, as well.

Blessings, Pamela+

This Sunday, July 19! Pizza ChurchA New Worship Opportunity at 5pm
Come to our first-ever Pizza Church on the patio outside Room 6/7 (or inside if too hot). Pizza Church is an intergenerational service consisting of informal, interactive worship followed by a time for fellowship with pizza. The service includes Holy Eucharist, so whether you’re not able to make church on Sunday morning or are just curious about trying something new, we hope you’ll join us. Our next Pizza Church will be on Sunday, August 23.

This Sunday morning, July 19, and again on July 26, we will have one 10am morning service only (Rite II Holy Eucharist).

Happening Soon in July
Saturday, July 25, 9am-3pm, Quiet Day for Women: Facilitated by Rev. Pamela, come to a quiet retreat day for women at St. Luke’s in Woodland. Pamela will focus on the topic of place and memory. $25 for lunch and supplies; scholarships available. RSVP directly to Rev. Pamela by this Wednesday, July 22.

Sunday, July 26, Special Welcome Coffee Hour after 10am Service: Be here for a special coffee hour after the 10am service to welcome our curate, Maggie, on her first Sunday at St. Martin’s. If you can bring a snack to share, please let Maria Acuna-Feldman or the office know. And if you’d like to contribute to a welcome gift, connect with the office as well. Let’s make Maggie’s first Sunday special! Maggie’s ordination to the transitional diaconate is this coming Saturday, July 18, at 11am at Trinity Cathedral. Let’s be there to support and congratulate Maggie!

Wednesday, July 29, Older, Wiser Laity (OWL) Tea, 2-4pm: All older and/or wiser laity and clergy are invited to an Afternoon Tea on July 29 in Room 6/7 and outside on the deck, weather permitting. Come at 2pm to share social time and light refreshments. RSVPs to the church office (info@churchofstmartin.org; 530-756-0444).

Celebrate The Belfry at a Dinner and Dessert Auction, August 1
All are invited to share a meal at Davis Lutheran Church (317 E 8th St in Davis) on August 1 at 5pm in thanks and celebration of the Belfry’s supporters and to encourage continued support. All are welcome, but it helps to have a headcount! RSVP here or call the DLC office (530) 756-5052. The Belfry is the Lutheran Episcopal Campus Ministry.

Save The Dates in August
Sunday, August 2, 11:30am, Adult Forum on Science and Faith: St. Martin’s parishioner Ben Eustis-Guthrie, who is finishing his PhD in Physics at UC Davis, will give a talk after the 10am service entitled “Why Pythagoras Was Right.” In Ben’s words, “The presentation adapts my favorite general education physics lessons about profound connections between music theory, quantum mechanics, and the periodic table. I’ll make connections to history and philosophy and to how our instincts for seeking beauty in the universe are vindicated by science. I’ll continue with what I believe this means for faith.”

Sunday August 2, When We Talk About Love: A Mini-Recital for Voice and Piano, 4pm: Musical affiliates of the Church of St. Martin Pierre Gianferrara, Sarah Eustis-Guthrie, and Mark Grote present a brief recital of art songs for soprano, baritone, and piano, featuring works by Fauré, Mendelssohn, and others. Admission is free. Join us in the church—all are welcome!

Thursday, August 6, 6pm on Zoom, First Official “Green Team” Meeting: We are launching a Green Team to continue the work formerly done by our Care for God’s Creation Committee and others. Come to a Zoom meeting to help us explore materials on “Becoming a Community of Creation” and to map out the path ahead. Thursdays will most likely not be our usual meeting night; we are open to in-person or hybrid meetings in the future. If you have questions, want the Zoom link, or would like to be part of this ministry but can’t attend our August meeting, reach out to Junior Warden Elise Keddie or the office.

St. Martin’s News for the Week of Sunday, 07/05/2026 From the RectorDear Ones,Tomorrow is the 4th of July, a day when we typically celebrate the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States. I don’t think I need to add a lot of words to the torrent of reflections about the current state of our country, our democracy, and the world.  Instead, I would ask that we take some time during this long weekend to pray. Come to church to pray, certainly! But also pray at home, by yourself or with others. Your prayers don’t have to be…

St. Martin’s News for the Week of Sunday, 06/28/2026 From the RectorDear Ones,This Sunday we will once again be wearing orange stoles in church. Orange has been a color that symbolizes gun violence awareness for more than 10 years now, and sadly the need to “wear orange” has not diminished in that time.  The shooting we are lamenting now happened on Monday at the public library in Chico, right here in our Diocese. We are united to them in bonds of friendship; many of us have spent time in Chico for school or recreation or church gatherings. The tragic loss…

Those of us who had an opportunity to meet with her last month found her delightful, bright, and deeply insightful about the work of the Church. You can read a bit more about Maggie below. Over the next few weeks we’ll be making plans to welcome…
